Obituary for Zinnia Bateman

BATEMAN
Zinnia Bateman (nee Symborski) passed away suddenly on March 17, 2014. Zinnia was born on July 13, 1935 to Joseph and Pearl Symborski of Plain Lake, AB. The fourth oldest of a family of twelve, she and the rest of her siblings attended a small country school in the Plain Lake District. Zinnia and Alec were married in Plain Lake on January 30, 1954 and thereafter moved to MacKay, AB where Alec worked on a road construction crew. In 1956, they moved to Sundre and then in 1968 to Olds. In 1971, Zinnia went back to school to become a hairdresser and worked in this career until her retirement. Even in retirement she faithfully provided hair services to a select group of people, often travelling to their homes or to the extended care to brighten their day. Zinnia enjoyed camping and travelling to the mountains with Alec and many summer holidays were spent with their kids camping together. Zinnia loved to cook and she made many outstanding meals for her family and friends. She loved Christmas and the holidays and especially enjoyed when her family was together. An avid curler for most of her life, she also became an avid golfer after her children left home. She also was a meticulous, beautiful quilter and her family will treasure the many quilts she made for them. Zinnia was a very dedicated volunteer and she spent many hours in the capacity as an Executive member of the Legion and also as a coordinator for Legion catering services. Zinnia also had a great appreciation for music and fine arts. She sang with the church choir for over 40 years and with the Olds Community Choir for many years as well. She attended many music and fine arts production throughout her life. She was a devout Catholic and was a parishioner and a volunteer in the church her entire life and was a CWL member for over 50 years. Zinnia will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She leaves behind her husband of 60 years, Alec; her children; Lorraine(Lorne) Guthrie; Ken(Lorna), Jacki(Raymond) Blatz; Patrick(Nadene); her grandchildren Melissa Guthrie(Rob Munro), Jenna Guthrie(Michael Khan), Kristin Handsaeme(Cam McIntosh), Jennifer Handsaeme(Shylo Harvey), Kelly Bateman, Dakota Blatz, Michael Blatz, Sydney Blatz, Taylor Bateman, Ryan Bateman, Zoe Bateman; and her great grandchildren, Hailey and Abby Munroe, Brexten McIntosh, Cashis Harvey and soon to be grandbaby Khan; her siblings Mike(Mary), Bill(Ann), Phyllis(Bill), Jeanette, Terry, Darlene(Jim), Wayne(Sylvia); as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Pearl; her siblings Mildred(Bill Chrapko), Leon(Shirley), Angela(Eugene Woywitka) and Edward. Funeral Mass was held on Friday March 21, 2014 at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Olds. Interment followed in the Olds Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Olds.
