Life Story for Margaret "Peggy" Nerland (Matear)

Margaret "Peggy" Nerland (Matear)
Margaret Nerland (née Matear)

Margaret (Peggy) Nerland was born of Irish descent in Edmonton, Alberta. She grew up on a farm near Pickardville with her older siblings James (Jim), Martha, Betty, and Lydia. After she was married to Einar Nerland, Peggy worked in Calgary Eaton’s as a clothing purchaser. After she moved to Edmonton she began working as a secretary for the N.W.T. and Yukon Engineers in the Army. This led to a series of other secretarial jobs throughout Alberta and Northern B.C. (Dawson Creek) during which Peggy improved her secretarial skills by taking a speed writing course and later an accounting course. After her husband’s death in a car accident in Northern B.C., Peggy returned to Calgary. In 1960, Peggy began work with Pennant Drilling Ltd. and later transferred to Canadian Homestead Oils when Pennant ceased operations. Shortly after, Dale Simmons of Simmons Drilling Ltd. called her to join him as his right hand woman. At the time, they were the only two employees and Peggy stayed with Dale to help grow his company. 18 years later it had expanded to the point that there were over 800 employees and a number of companies underneath the Simmons Group umbrella. Soon after retiring, Peggy met and later lived with her beloved companion, Harold Bickel, who passed away in 2000. Peggy leaves behind her son Raymond, grandchildren Christine Harvey (Michael), Teri-Lee Binnie (Kevin) and Sean Gobin (Kim), as well as her beloved great-grandchildren Amanda, Carol-Anne, Chelsea, Jenna, Ryan, Connor, Danielle and Quinn. Peggy was also particularly close with her two nieces Geraldine Gray of Edmonton and Dorothy Condie of Victoria, B.C. Peggy was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Carole Nerland, in 1993.
