Obituary for John Donnelly

John Donnelly of Innisfail passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the Innisfail Hospital on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at the age of 83.
John was born December 5, 1930 in Huntingdon, Quebec. John started his life on his parent’s dairy farm along the Chateauguay River. Therefore, John began his life of hard work at a young age doing farm chores with his father. When John was 16 years old, in 1946, he went west on the harvest excursion and work in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. He returned to Quebec by train. He worked in Weston’s Bakery close to Montreal, Quebec and also worked as a plumber’s helper in Huntingdon, Quebec for a short time. John was also a truck driver, as he drove a milk truck and picked up milk at the local dairy farms and brought it to the dairy in Montreal. This required many skills and a strong back, as the road conditions were frequently poor and the milk was stored in large milk cans. John worked as a textile worker at Cleyn & Tinker, for many years. Once again, he faced the challenges of long work days and shift work. During his years at the textile factory, John was very active in the union and assisted with the first unionization of the local textile factories. John left the textile factory and purchased his father’s dairy farm. As a dairy farmer, John and his family encountered the challenges and rewards of daily farm life. In 1979, John sold the dairy farm and relocated to Innisfail, Alberta. Once settled in Alberta, he worked at Shur Gain Feed service. Later, John worked as a maintenance man and caretaker at Autumn Glen Lodge. During his working years, John also utilized his carpenter skills by building his home and was frequently asked to help out his family with various building projects. Throughout his life John demonstrated a good work ethic to his children and toiled long hours for his family.
John will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years Marjorie; his children Marilyn (Pat), Elaine(Marcel), Kevin(Gail),Joanne (Justice) and Robert (Armande); 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the Innisfail Legion on November 28, 2014 from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM. Memorial donations may be made to the Innisfail Health Centre or The Lending Cupboard Red Deer.
