Obituary for Royden Joseph ""Roy"" Kennedy

Royden Joseph ""Roy"" Kennedy
KENNEDY
Roy, more fondly known as Roydie, Grandpa, Pa, Dad or most affectionately, as the "old man" was born in Lower Derby, NB on October 13, 1934. Roy passed away peacefully at the age of 82 on Friday, September 29, 2017 surrounded by family in Innisfail, AB. Roy was a New Brunswick boy at heart and although he lived the majority of his life elsewhere, he would always call that home. At a young age, Roy joined the Canadian Air Force but quickly realized the service wasn't for him. He began his journey west by hitching a ride on the rails... ultimately landing in the central Alberta area where he began his life's career in the oil patch and met Doris McLeod, the mother of his children. Work took Roy and Doris to many parts of the country as evidenced by the birth of their children in Regina, Calgary and Fredericton. Probably the highlight of his career was his travels to interesting places like Iran, Bangladesh, Algeria, Libya and providing a home for his family in beautiful countries like Greece and Spain. Doris passed in 1991 after a long battle with cancer. Huxley continued to be home base where Roy ultimately retired and began his life with June. Their interests involved a HUGE market garden, bakery and the best cinnamon buns this side of heaven. Roy was an avid hunter, fisherman, woodsman and hobby farmer. The only thing more exciting to Roy than a mean game of crib would be a 2 pound Atlantic lobster followed by a good old John Wayne duster movie. Roy's legacy he leaves behind is "work hard, play harder" and the strong unbreakable bond between his six loving children. Special acknowledgements to the residents and staff of Autumn Glenn Lodge as they became extended family to Roy and were great comfort during the last 4 years he resided there. We also wish to remember the nursing staff at Innisfail Health Centre. Their kindness, compassion and dedication to Roy were incredible to witness. A host of angels appeared to care for him in his last days and we are forever grateful. He was predeceased by his parents, Isabel Margaret Quenneville of Huxley, AB and William Kennedy of Cork County, NB. He is survived by his wife, June Kennedy of Ardrossan, AB and his sister, Macrena (Leslie) Howatt, Victoria, PEI. Lovingly remembered by his 6 children Blake (Carol) Kennedy, Huxley, AB; Randy Kennedy (Louise), Rocky Mountain House, AB; Jacqueline (Ken) McCook, Innisfail, AB; Darryl Kennedy, Cobourg, ON; Terry Kennedy, Stettler, AB and Margaret (Stephen) Unser, Coquitlam, BC. He also leaves behind 11 grandchildren Jason, Alisha, Melanie, Justine/Shane, Brittany/Emily/Cara, Melodie/ Gabe, Sam and 6 great-grandchildren Madelyn, Amelia, Max, Zach, Sophia, Elinor. Roy also leaves behind 2 nieces, Dawn (Dale) McOrmond and Kim Gallant and one nephew, Chris "Bubba" Howatt. Funeral Services will be held on what would have been Roy's 83rd birthday, Friday, October 13, 2017 at Our Lady of Peace Roman Catholic Church, 4304 49 Ave., Innisfail, AB T4G 1M6 at 11:00 am. A time of gathering and luncheon will follow in the parish hall. A private family interment will occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers and at the family's request, we ask that you consider contributing to a fund at the Innisfail Health Centre that will go toward improvements in the palliative care room and the nursing staff room. Please forward donations to Innisfail Health Centre, Attention: Jeff Hammel, 5023 42 Street, Innisfail, AB T4G 1A9.
