DENNIS ROBERT SELLS
1950 - 2017
Mr. Dennis R. Sells of Innisfail, Alberta, passed away suddenly on March 13, 2017. He is survived by two sisters, Lorraine Bischoff of Calgary, and Judi Lee (Gary) of Calgary, and his nieces and nephews, Ryan Bischoff, Jason (Deanna) Bischoff, Michelle Lee, Carolyn (Jeff) Walker, Derek (Courtney) Lee, Jennifer Lee and Stephanie (Bryce) Cameron. He was predeceased by his parents, Howard and Margaret “Peggy” (Nelson) Sells of Calgary a sister Jacqueline and a brother in law Vic Bischoff.
Born 27, July 1950 in Vanguard, Saskatchewan, the family moved to Calgary in 1952. Dennis was proud of his Saskatchewan roots and as a child, especially loved spending time at the Sells family farm in Gull Lake with his cousins. He graduated from Ernest Manning High School in 1968 where he studied automotives. His love of cars and trucks continued throughout his life and it was through his involvement in car clubs and organizations that he made many wonderful friends, particularly CB radio, Classic cars and Ford cars and trucks.
Dennis worked for Revelstoke Companies for 25 years, and eventually became a concrete truck driver, a job that he was really proud of. He would often brag that he helped build Calgary, which wasn’t far from the truth. He poured concrete at many landmark buildings in and around the city. He also worked part-time at Greco Pizza where he forged many lasting friendships, especially with his boss, George.
Dennis loved being around people. He spent many hours at the Danish Canadian Club, driving around the streets of Calgary at Christmas time as “Hot Rod Santa”, attending Calgary Stampeder football games, and participating in bowling leagues. He loved music and was a karaoke host for a number of years, and also an Elvis tribute artist.
A highlight of his life was volunteering as a driver for ABC during the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. He had many stories of chauffeuring athletes and media executives to their various venues, one of whom told him that he was “one in a million”, a nick-name that stuck.
Dennis was a unique individual. He was very outgoing and friendly and those who met him didn’t soon forget him. He loved being the center of attention. He had an amazing memory for details, particularly dates and places. He had a big heart and did many kind things for others in his own way. His close friends and family meant a great deal to him and although he sometimes struggled with his relationships, he really cared about them and he was proud of their accomplishments.
Dennis faced some big mental and physical challenges throughout his life, but through it all he maintained a cheerful optimism. The last few years were particularly difficult for him, but he found a lot of joy in his three dogs, Bailey, Gizmo and Harley. Dennis will be remembered fondly by those who knew him. The family is grateful for all the kind neighbors, friends, doctors and nurses who took care of him throughout the years.
