Obituary for William Walter "Willie" Bates

WILLIAM WALTER BATES
June 12, 1929 - August 19, 2016

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Willie Bates. Willie was born in Olds and grew up in Eagle Valley on the family farm. He was the youngest son of Walter and Rosabelle (Reid) Bates. Willie was known by everyone as a firm, loving, honest, hardworking, "salt of the earth" person. He took great pride in his farm and was known as an exceptional cattleman. Over the years he had a mixture of Hereford and Angus cattle. Willie was near and dear to all who knew him. He was always ready to pitch in and help his neighbors and friends with the harvest, branding, haying or calving. Willie enjoyed rodeos and was a member of the Sundre Rodeo Association for years, sponsoring events. He and Lynn Jensen owned the Lazy J Saloon on the outskirts of Sundre, where many a good times were had! Willie also enjoyed sports. He was a great baseball player, in bygone days and enjoyed watching the Toronto Blue Jays play. In the last few years as he slowed down, he got drop in company from family and friends. There were always rousing games of "Bates Rummy" and laughter. Willie always had a positive attitude and his quick wit would brighten any situation. After a visit with Willie one always felt better for it. Willie is survived by his nieces, Joy Huber, Alva Titzlaff and Charlene Siegfried Anderson and their families. Also by his most special friend a big red heeler named "Ryder"; they were totally devoted to one another. He was predeceased by sisters Catherine Glosky and Myrtle Tudor and brothers Charlie, Roy and Frank Siegfried. Special thanks to Dr. Eugene Landsbergen and the nurses at the Sundre Hospital for the wonderful care they gave Willie. Graveside services were held on Saturday August 27, 2016 at the Eagle Valley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Rocky Organization for Animal Rescue Society (ROAR).
