He was born in Calgary on May 18, 1947. He then later moved to Manyberries, Alberta, where he was raised. He graduated from high school in Medicine Hat, and then settled in Carstairs in 2004. He met the love of his life Deborah and they were married in 2002. James had an abundance of love and zest for life and it shone through his family and his home. James will be profoundly missed by his wife Deborah; his children Richard (Sarah) Cunningham, Cori (Len) Braun, Mike (Charlene) Lewis, Michaela Lewis and Kyle Lewis, and his grandchildren; Vanessa, Isaiah, Mackayla, Dylan, Andrew, Samantha, Kenneth and Phoenix. His parents, Edward and Phyliss Cunningham, predeceased him. A Wake was held on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at the Cermona Community Hall, followed by a celebration of his life at the Cunningham’s Farm.
