Obituary for Thomas William Hamlin

Thomas (Tom) William Hamlin of Calgary, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Colonel Belcher Carewest Home on Wednesday, September 08, 2021. Members of his loving family were by his side in person and in thought. Tom Hamlin began his good and long life in Benson, Saskatchewan. He loved telling stories of the ramblings in the small village, of his brothers and sisters, baseball, his dad’s shop and his mom’s cooking. In later years we relished the times Tom and Bob would get together and tell stories, reminding each other of one neighbor or another. Tom finished high school in Benson and joined the air force towards the end of the Second World War - enthusiastically wanting to be overseas. His training as a radar specialist took him to Newfoundland until the war ended. After the war he moved to the west coast and earned his journeyman electrician’s ticket. In 1951 he married Barbara Burgess Woolf, the love of his life, in Surrey B.C. They moved back to the prairies and hired themselves out as farm hands in Davidson, and in 1955 moved to their own quarter section of land to have a successful run of farming up to 5 sections, 80 head of cattle, and a mix of milk cows, hogs and chickens. Tom spent winters rebuilding tractor engines but also starting a family with arrivals of Tommy and Patricia. The farm was a great place to welcome relatives where chores were always part of the visit. Tom always challenged himself in work and in studies. After a year in the interior of British Columbia and the arrival of Robert, in the late 60’s Tom settled on completing an agriculture degree in Saskatoon. He then worked for the Saskatchewan Irrigation Development Centre, and Federal Agricultural programs where he was known for his frank and honest analysis. Once retired from government, Tom and Barb followed the grandchildren around from Outlook/Pike Lake to North Battleford to Victoria, to Winnipeg, to Olds. A short three years ago, Tom moved to Colonel Belcher Carewest longterm care. Over the course of his life he contributed the best of human qualities to his family and community, was generous, loyal, ambitious, inquisitive with a witty and quiet sense of humor. He is dearly missed by all the family. We think of him with Barbara, probably having lunch - some homemade beef and barley soup or baked beans. Tom was predeceased by his wife, Barbara Burgess Hamlin (Woolf), his mother Hulda Henrietta Amelia Hinz and his father, William Latham Hamlin and brothers and sisters, Bud, Dorothy and Barbie. His is survived by his children, Tom (Debra), Patricia, Robert (Sharon) grandchildren, Sarah, Brianna (Aaron) Emily (Dave) Michael (Veronica), Latham and Atley and great grandchildren; River, Norah, Benjamin, Daniel and Luke; his brother Bob and his wife Ellen, sister-in-law Lou (Bud) and many, many nieces, nephews and cousins. A Celebration of Tom’s Life will be held virtually and will be interred at a later date. Memorial tributes may be made directly to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
