Obituary for Sandra McDiarmid

Sandra Margaret McDiarmid, aged 73, passed away on the evening of October 24, 2023. She was our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and dear friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Sandy was born on October 10, 1950 in Ottawa, Ontario and was raised in Osgoode, Ontario. She later moved to Balzac, Alberta to start and raise a family. Many adventures saw Sandy moving with her family to Amargosa Valley, Nevada, Fairmont, BC and ultimately settling in Airdrie, Alberta. In order to be closer to the grandkids, Sandy moved to Didsbury, Alberta where she remained until her passing.

Sandy loved supporting her children at their sporting events over the years and was their biggest cheerleader on the sidelines. She, along with her dear friend, Rita Stel, enjoyed coaching one of the first youth female ringette teams in Airdrie. Sandy would later come to love watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren thrive in their sports and activities.

Sandy enjoyed many years working for Royal Le Page, helping people with relocations. She later worked for the MI Group and then M&M Meats, where she met close friend Joan O’Reilly. After retirement, Sandy volunteered with organizations such as the Airdrie Festival of Lights and the Lioness Club of Airdrie. She had great pride in her community. More recently, Sandy was an avid reader and puzzle solver. She also enjoyed watching her tv shows and truly cherished time with family and friends.

Sandy is predeceased by her brother, Douglas Nixon and her son-in-law, Mike Taylor. She is survived by her 3 children Carolyn Taylor of Didsbury, Alberta, Jeff McDiarmid of Airdrie, Alberta and Brent McDiarmid (Cherilyn) of Kamloops, BC; her 9 grandchildren Ami (Cory), Samantha (Justin), Kassandra, Linzi, Tyra, Taryn, Aidan, Kylie, Reese; and her 5 great-grandchildren Syliss, Saylem, Rennick, Maximus, Haleigh. Aside from children and grandchildren, Sandy is also survived by her brother, Barry Nixon (Jo-Anne) of Metcalf, Ontario as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date and will include all family and friends.
