Mr. Rudolf ‘Rudy’ van Doornum passed away peacefully at the Innisfail Long Term Care Centre, Innisfail, Alberta on Friday, September 23, 2022 at the age of 79 years. Rudy was born in The Hague, Netherlands on October 31, 1942, to Hendrikus and Hermina van Doornum. Seeking new opportunities, the family immigrated to Canada, arriving in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1951. After finishing High School, he worked and traveled in Canada, spending time in Toronto, Thunder Bay, Calgary, and Golden. Rudy and Lynne were married on September 11, 1976, and settled in Melfort, Saskatchewan. Patricia joined the family the following year. In January of 1985, Rudy joined the Corrections Service of Canada. After training in Mission, British Columbia, he accepted a position at the Bowden Institution in Bowden, Alberta and the family settled in Innisfail, Alberta. Rudy was on staff at Bowden until his retirement in 2011. He was also very active with St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Innisfail, Alberta, and spent time on the board and as an Elder in the community. Celebrating Rudy’s life is his loving wife of forty-six years, Lynne and his beloved daughter, Patricia (Mike), his nieces, Carol Laewetz and Sherry Hoffer and their families, his brother, Rob and his nephew, Jay, as well as extended family in the Netherlands. Rudy was predeceased by his mother, Hermina (1944), his father, Hendrikus (1974), his sister, Hermina (1987), his stepmother, Johanna (2005), and his brother, Ed (2022). Lynne and Patricia would like to thank the staff at Innisfail Long Term Care for the care they provided to Rudy. A Celebration of Rudy’s Life will be held at a later date.
