Obituary for Ray Douglas Mundell

Ray Douglas Mundell was born February 19, 1933, the second eldest of nine children to John and Thelma Mundell of the Big Rock District near Okotoks, Alberta. He entered peacefully into his eternal rest on Monday, November 7, 2022 at the Innisfail Rosefield Centre, Innisfail, Alberta with his loving and devoted wife of sixty-four years, Mary ‘Molly’ by his side. Ray’s kind and gentle spirit endeared him to everyone he met. Growing up in a large family, he learned the value of hard work from an early age which instilled a lifelong love of the land. The family farm was next to the Sheep River where they learned to fish and swim, the children rode horseback to school. Ray continued his education at Olds College, Olds, Alberta where he obtained a Diploma of Agriculture. Ray came to know the Lord as a young man and dedicated his life to Him, his faith steadfast throughout his years. He married his love, Molly, in 1958; together they raised four children. Ray and Molly settled near Spruce View, Alberta in 1965. During their years on the farm, they served their community with the Gulf oil dealership, providing fuel for local farmers. Ray was well respected and sought after as a hay contractor along with his sons Jonathan and Robin, passing on his love of livestock and growing feed. His children and some of his grandchildren went through 4-H, enlisting his advice and ever-patient help with their steer projects. This year his great-granddaughter Penny is continuing the motto, “learn to do by doing” in Prince Edward Island. Ray would have been proud. As the family grew and became a global family, Ray and Molly have had opportunities to travel, many times to Saskatchewan, Prince Edward Island and two trips together to Australia with Molly making a third visit in 2019 for their granddaughter Rebecca’s wedding. Grandchildren held a special place in Ray’s heart, there is hardly a photo of him without a cluster of kids. He spread joy wherever he went. Ray is lovingly remembered by his wife, Mary, his children, Rosemary (Rollie) Cantin of Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Jonathan (Dawn) of Spiritwood, Saskatchewan, Jessica (Peter) Fullerton of Victoria, Australia and Robin (Shauna) of Spruce View, Alberta, his nineteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He will also be deeply missed by his siblings, Roy (Shirley), Nancy (Bob), Warren (Guidong), Cole, and Adelle (Larry). Ray was predeceased by his parents, John and Thelma, a brother, Frank and sisters, Myrna and Patricia. A Celebration of Ray’s Life will be held at the Baptist Church of Innisfail, 5204 Woodland Road, Innisfail, Alberta on Friday, November 18, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. with Visitation held at 11:00 a.m. A Private Graveside Internment will take place after the Service with a Reception to follow at the Baptist Church of Innisfail where family and friends are invited to share their treasured memories of Ray. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff at Innisfail Rosefield Centre for their loving and committed care of Ray these past four years.
