Obituary for Maxine Irva Hughes (Sanders)

HUGHES, Maxine
1931 ~ 2022
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Maxine Irva Hughes (nee Sanders) at Calgary, Alberta on December 17, 2022 at the age of 91 years. Maxine was born in Pense, Saskatchewan and grew up in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. She completed a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Saskatchewan, and shortly after, met Glyn Hughes at a dance. They were married after the harvest in 1955. Having struggled trying to make a living at farming, Glyn and Maxine made the move for opportunity to Taylor, British Columbia, where a new natural gas processing plant had been built. That was the start of thirty-three busy and fulfilling years for Maxine. Once her children got older, Maxine worked for fifteen years with the school board. Glyn and Maxine chose to retire in Innisfail, Alberta. They became active members of the United Church and volunteered for several local charities. They visited many parts of the world and spent time in their fifth wheel trailer in Arizona. After Glyn’s passing, Maxine continued her charitable work, joined the Red Hat Society and spent time with kids and grandkids. She enjoyed knitting and playing games, particularly Scrabble. She was hard to beat in any word game. In 2017, Maxine moved to Calgary. Maxine will be remembered as a very compassionate and generous person who loved her family. She will be forever missed. Maxine will be lovingly remembered by her three children, Karen (Terry), Jeffrey, and Scott (Susan), her four grandchildren, Carl, Dylan, Erica, and Alec, and one great grandchild, Torben. A Graveside Service will be held in the spring of 2023. We would like to thank the staff at The Manor Village at Rocky Ridge, Calgary, Alberta. We are truly grateful for the care and support they provided to Maxine throughout her mobility struggles caused by Parkinson’s disease. If desired, Memorial Donations in memory of Maxine can be made to Parkinson Canada at www.parkinson.ca or to a Charity of the Donor’s Choice.
