Obituary for Matthew Bates

Matthew passed away peacefully on March 14, 2023, at the age of 99 years in the Innisfail Hospital. He was born in Calgary to John and Catherine Bates. He grew up on a farm in the Langdon area most of his childhood life. In 1942, at the age of 18 years he enlisted in the army and was sent overseas until World War II ended in 1945. Upon his return, he farmed, drove school bus and was a custodian for many years in the Chestermere School. In 1970 he moved to Blue Ridge, Alberta where he continued farming and raising cattle. Some time later he moved to Olds where he worked part time as a truck driver until his retirement. Matthew enjoyed the outdoors especially hunting and fishing. He was predeceased by his parents John and Catherine Bates; brother Jack Bates; sister Joyce Laycock; step daughter Fern Cursiatto and most recently hid grandson Guy Boisjoli. He is survived by his wife Jacqueline of 52 years; son Brian (Sylvia); daughters Darlene (Gary) Boisjoli , Gayle (Barry) Howden, and Janet Carr; his extended family Calvin (Robbin), Glen (Cara ) and Joy Cursiatto as well as several grandchildren and great grand children. In lieu of flowers memorial tributes can be made directly to the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #105, Olds.
