Obituary for Manfred Kurt Mueller

Manfred (Fred) Mueller passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 25th, 2022, one month before his 89th birthday.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Lilly Mueller in 2012. Manfred is survived by his sister Ingrid, his niece Ulrike and by his four children: Michael, Roland (Dorothy), Susan (Doug), Kurt; his four grandchildren: Melissa, Sarah, Kandice and Eric and four great-grandchildren.

Manfred was born in Breslau, Germany on November 25, 1933. In 1958, in search of a better future, Manfred took a ship across the Atlantic to Canada. In 1961, Manfred returned to Germany and met his wife, Lilly. They married in June and together (along with her son Michael) they moved back to Canada in 1962. They had a brief stay in Timmins, Ontario before moving back to Uranium City, Saskatchewan, where Roland and Susan were born. In pursuit of his horticultural career, the family moved to Indian Head, Saskatchewan where his youngest son, Kurt, was born in 1967. After another move to Germany and then Saskatoon, the family left Saskatchewan to live in Bowden, Alberta.

Here Manfred worked as a horticulturist at the Bowden Penitentiary. In the mid 70’s Manfred followed his passion and, along with his wife Lilly, they started their business: L & M Nurseries. Over the last few years the business was better known as “Manfred and Son Field Grown Perennials”. During this past summer, Manfred planted, potted, tended his perennial garden and attended every Red Deer Farmers’ Market over the season.

Manfred was a wise and pragmatic man who always took care of his family. He was happiest when sharing stories with his family or when his hands were covered in earth from his garden. He will be remembered for his crisp and outstanding memory, quick wit and mischievous sparkle in his eye. He will be deeply missed by all who loved him. At Manfred’s request, a formal funeral will not take place at this time. Instead, his family is celebrating his life at a family memorial gathering. In lieu of flowers, planting a tree in Manfred’s memory would create a living legacy that honors his life.
