Obituary for James "Jim" Scopick

James Richard Scopick, "Jim", was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan on October 27, 1940. He was the eldest child of Joseph and Elizabeth Scopick of Wakaw, Saskatchewan. He passed away in Olds, Alberta on August 19, 2023. Jim grew up in the thriving town of Wakaw in the heart of the Canadian prairie wheatbelt. He excelled academically and was a natural athlete, participating in Track and Field events at the provincial level. As an adult, he became an avid golfer and throughout his life worked to perfect his game. He inherited his mother's gift of music. As a child, he had the voice of an angel, and he played the piano as if it were an extension of himself. He could hear a tune and instantly play it. His vibrant boogie-woogie was the life and soul of any social gathering. After graduating from High School, Jim earned a degree in Commerce at the University of Saskatchewan, in Saskatoon. From there, he embarked on a successful career in Banking and Finance. On August 11, 1962, he married Barbara Walsh and together they raised 3 sons, Tony, Rick, and Neil. Jim's career took him to Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, and Calgary. In Ottawa, he worked for the Federal Department of Industry, Trade and Commerce. Jim had also inherited his father's love of independence and entrepreneurship and he worked for most of his career in the private sector. In later years he was an advisor to the Federal Government on financial issues. In 1985 he moved west to Calgary, where he took the reins as Chief Executive Officer of the Alberta Central Credit Union. Under his stewardship the Credit Union significantly expanded its range of services and became one of the most successful central credit unions in Canada. He was a great leader and mentor who built a successful team of quality professionals that have gone on to continue his legacy of leadership and success. Jim also participated in Task Forces at the national level to examine and enhance Canadian financial services. He was involved in both the Standing Senate Committee of 1997/98 on Banking, Trade and Commerce, and the Task Force on the Future of the Canadian Financial Services Sector. He was dedicated to innovation and excellence in the Canadian financial system. Like many Albertans, Jim and Barb retired to Shuswap Lake in BC and bought property in Arizona for golf and a comfortable retirement. They enjoyed boating, travel and spent the winter months in the south. Sadly, Barbara's heart condition became fatal, and she passed away suddenly. Later in life he remarried Glenys Hanson and lived in Nanoose Bay on Vancouver Island. She predeceased him in 2014. Toward the end of his life he moved to Sundre, Alberta and he enjoyed time with his son Rick and the companionship, care and comfort lovingly provided by Carol-Ann Villeneuve. Jim was predeceased by his parents, his sister Aira and his son Neil. He is survived by his brother Ken and his sister Margaret, his sons Tony and Rick, grandson Jesse, grand daughter-in-law Kristie, numerous other relative and his great grandchildren Rylan and Zoe whom he doted upon and loved dearly. The family would like to thank the Sundre hospital staff, medical support team and all of Jim's friends who helped him and gave him comfort during these past months and years. He will be forever in our hearts, a shining soul. Funeral Services will be held at St. Bonaventure Church in Calgary on Friday September 8 at 11am. The Internment will take place thereafter at the Eden Brook Funeral Home and Cemetery.
