Obituary for Gary Sanfred Fryklind

Gary “Fryk” Fryklind passed away suddenly on April 22, 2021 at the age of 80. Left behind to always love and remember Gary are his children Garrick (Angelika), Kerby (Cheryl), Daegan (Nabil); grandchildren Ashleigh (Josh), Taylor (Raychelle) and Kirsten (Florian); grandson Cassius; his eternal friend Betty Young; family and cronies across the country; and his devoted dog, Mulligan “Mully” Fryklind.

Born in Wadena, Saskatchewan on March 31, 1941, Gary was a rabble rouser and rapscallion as a teen with his buddies (including lifelong friend Bob Forbes), until heading off to Teacher’s College at University of Saskatoon. Gary went on to start a Master of Education as well during his time as an art teacher for the Calgary Board of Education. The majority of his career was spent teaching art at Western Canada and John G. Diefenbaker high schools, and his true legacy was as an educator, honing the skills of thousands of art students over the many years.

Fryk was an avid golfer, having gone as far as the Royal St. George’s, but Revelstoke was his true base for many years. He taught his three children the sport, and it became the language of the family. Gary loved going to movies with his grandchildren, tooling away in the workshop on various carpentry projects, road trips to California, and cinnamon buns. Master of understated dry wit, Gary loved to laugh. He was a cowboy at heart, living a simple life. He knew what he loved, and he loved those he knew.

He said you could gauge the quality of a stereo by the number of buttons on the deck. The fewer the buttons, the higher the quality. Gary had two buttons: go, and stop. We will miss him dearly.
