Obituary for Carole Anne Fletcher

Carole Anne Fletcher passed away at the Myron Thompson Health Center in Sundre, Alberta on April 15, 2022 at the age of 76 years old. Carole Anne Fletcher was born to Henry and Hazel Scherlie on July 15, 1945. She spent her childhood on the farm at Winfield Alberta. Carole demonstrated grit and determination from a young age as she was critically injured when struck by a semi-truck at the age of 6. She had to learn to do everything over again, including walking. Upon her recovery, she cared for her two younger brothers, Allen and Doug, as her mother experienced ill health. Upon completing high school, Carole moved to Edmonton and completed training to become a licensed practical nurse. She worked at the Misericordia, Ponoka General Hospital and Rimbey Hospital. It was there that she met the love of her life, Ernie Fletcher. After their marriage in 1969, they lived in Red Deer and Carole continued to work at the Red Deer Hospital. They moved to the farm at Bergen in 1978 and later the farm at Eagle Hill in 1991. Carole lived a simple and quiet life driving tractors, stacking and raking hay and hauling meals to the field. She never retired. She continued to love and support her family and friends, showering them with phone calls, handwritten letters, cards and boxes of baking. Her special joy was to prepare treats for her grandchildren in great anticipation of their visits. Cupcakes with frosting in the color she knew they liked or a book or a t-shirt in a theme she knew they enjoyed. Every moment she had with them was a special treasure which she spoke of often. Carole indeed had a very special gift of love. Her kindness, gentleness, thoughtfulness and patience were evident to all who knew her, including the many kitties and dogs she lovingly cared for throughout the years. It was a very lucky kitty who landed on her and Ernie’s doorstep! Carole’s life can be summarized in the following from 1 Corinthians 13:4-7: “4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” In April 2021, she received the diagnosis of cancer and was determined to win. As she did everything in life, she gave that fight all she had; all the while still thinking of others more than herself. She leaves behind her beloved husband of 53 years, Ernie; her daughters Susan (Stirling), Tanya (Troy); grandchildren Eleah (Jesse), Joshua, Madison and Daniel. In January, she was greeted with the arrival of her great-grandson, Theoden. She was continually devoted to her brothers Allen (Fran) and Doug (Carman) and sister-in-law Selma. She is survived by her niece Karen Taylor and nephews Dan Stroebel, John Stroebel, Brett Scherlie and Todd Scherlie. Carole was pre-deceased by her parents Henry and Hazel Scherlie.
