Obituary for Allen Gary Culver

With heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of our dear father, Allen Gary Culver age 85 years on October 6, 2023. Dad passed away peacefully with family present at the Red Deer Hospice after a brave and honorable battle with Colon Cancer. Dad was born June 19, 1938 at the University Hospital in Edmonton to Gladys and the late Charles Culver of Fort Assiniboine, Alberta. Sadly, Gladys had been widowed six months prior to the birth of Gary and Gayle, they never had the honor of meeting their father. He was the tenth of ten children, a twin, also the youngest son. Dad had a calling and that was horses, he grew up with the bug and he even rode a time or two into his early 80’s. He worked for various ranches throughout the United States and guided pack trains for years in Jasper for the Brewsters. He loved his job and could throw a diamond like no other. In July 1966 he met the love of his life Virginia Mae (Ginny) Kerns and they were married on horseback (of course) on October 14, 1966. They had many an adventure before settling in Golden, British Columbia where both Shannon and Kelly were born. But their adventure didn’t stop there as they moved back to Alberta to Ginny’s childhood home to raise running Quarter horses and later on Paints as well. Dad supported us girls in all the local gymkhanas and light horse shows, and we grew up on the backs of the finest horses anyone could own. Dad and mom’s partnership raised some great horses, but the pride and joy of our herd was our foundation sire, Davys Whirlaway. Dad could be found down at the barn taking care of all the foals or putting a ride on an outside horse sent to him for training. Along with horses, dad enjoyed fishing, dancing, camping, a really good joke, playing crib and being a grandfather. Dad is survived by his wife of fifty seven years, Virginia (nee Kerns), oldest daughter Shannon and husband Paul with his children Adrianna and Ashton, youngest daughter Kelly and husband Eric, her daughter Maryse, and his children Taran and Chalene with her children Damian and Gracie. He is survived by his one remaining sibling, his sister, Margaret Guignion (nee Culver) as well as numerous nephews and nieces. Dad was predeceased by this father, Charles Culver in January of 1938, his mother Gladys Culver in 1997 as well eight siblings, including his twin Gayle in March of 2021. At dad’s request, cremation will take place with a Celebration of Life will be held at the Olds Legion at a later date in 2024.
