Obituary for Jack Heatherington

HEATHERINGTON
Richard David “Jack” Heatherington passed away peacefully at Olds Hospital & Care Centre on October 6, 2019 at the age of 77 years. Jack was an avid sportsman and athlete. He loved to play and coach football, basketball, volleyball and hockey even though he would say that his skills in hockey were lacking. In his later years golf was his sport of choice and he was quite good. He never wanted to give up being active and he continued to play golf even after the amputation of his left leg. Jack promised himself to be the best parent possible and volunteered a lot of time to his children while in Ponoka pool sharks. Jack had work ethic that surpassed all expectations all his life. From his beginnings as a popcorn salesman at a theatre in his home town of Carrot River, Saskatchewan, he earned 1 penny for every 10 cent bag of popcorn sold. Jack also worked at Ponoka’s Centennial Centre, which was then called Ponoka Mental Hospital, where he met the love of his life, Marilyn who was an aspiring Registered Nurse. Later when his family was growing up in Ponoka, Jack opened “Jacks Furniture” on 50th street. This was a big accomplishment for him and it made his family very proud that he was a “big” business man in Ponoka. Before retiring due to his medical issues in 1993, he was the director of housekeeping and laundry service at Ponoka General Hospital where he would say his biggest challenge was trying to keep the peace among 34 female staff. Jack met some of his best friends while serving with the Kinsmen of Ponoka and in 1984 he was awarded Kinsman of the year. He served for 16 years with the Kinsmen and held many positions in the club Jack’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the nurses and staff of Acute Care at Olds Hospital for their hard work and dedication to caring for Jack in his last few weeks there. Jack will be lovingly remembered by his wife Marilyn; daughter Karen (Kevin); son David (Lorraine) and grandchildren Chase and Ethan. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday October 11, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Olds United Church with Reverend Sarah Fanning officiating. Memorial tributes in Jack’s honor may be made to Olds Hospital & Care Centre or Kasota East Camp, Box 8951, Sylvan Lake, AB T4S 1S6.
