Ruby Darlene (Russell) Smith was born at the Olds General Hospital on March 15, 1960. Darlene passed away peacefully on Wednesday September 4th, 2019 at the Red Deer Regional Hospital with her family by her side after a courageous battle with cancer. She was the only child to parents Robert James Russell and Katharina Elizabeth Russell (Weimer). Darlene lived her entire life in Olds where she attended Olds Elementary School and then Olds Jr. Sr. High School. Darlene worked at the Red Rooster convenience store during high school along with AC Decorating. Darlene met the love of her life and future husband in 1977. On July 4, 1981, she married her husband of 38 years Randy Smith. Shortly before their marriage; Darlene began her banking career at the Bank of Montreal Olds Branch. She worked as a bank teller for many years and met many wonderful people many of which remained her friends throughout her life. In the early years of their marriage; Darlene & Randy enjoyed travel to Hawaii, Disneyland and Las Vegas, along with many motorcycle trips throughout Alberta and BC before eventually settling down to have a family. In November of 1994 Darlene left the bank when they were blessed with their first child Carly Amanda. Darlene was a devoted mom and she decided not to return to the bank and began her new career as a stay at home mom. Darlene & Randy welcomed their second child Robert Russell in September 1997. Her at home career was a busy one which included caring for her mother along with raising her young family. Darlene kept very busy with her family and immaculate yard and flower garden until her mom’s passing in November of 2003. Once the kids were older Darlene decided on a whim to go back to her banking career as teller at Scotiabank Olds Branch where she worked until her passing. She will be dearly missed by her friends and family and all who had the honour to know her. Darlene was predeceased by her father Jim in 1981; mother Katharina in 2003; grandmother Mary Weimer; uncle and aunt Fred and Molly Weimer, cousin Lorraine Flinn (Weimer), brothers in law Gary Able, Rodger Smith, Terry Smith, mother in law Helen Hudson (Smith-Stromsmoe), fathers in law Bert Smith, and Stan Hudson. She leaves to mourn her loving husband Randy, her two wonderful children Carly and Robert Smith, honorary sister Janet (Ross) Goodman, cousins Marilyn Weimer, Allan (Dorthy) Weimer, Stan (Laurette) Weimer, Stewart (Margret) Flinn. 2nd cousins Randy (Debbie) Flinn, Veronica (Lance) Pana, Alisa (Aaron) Kolenosky, Dawnaca (Stan) Martin, April (Michel) Legre, Owen (Amanda) Weimer. She also leaves to mourn her sister in law Melody Able (Paul Grant), Brothers in law Barry (Julie) Smith, Don (Vicki) Smith, and Cameron Smith. Darlene was a kind and considerate woman who put everyone else’s needs before her own and did so with such compassion and devotion that her loss will be felt by everyone that knew her. Darlene’s passing leaves a huge hole in all our hearts; especially the hearts of her family. We love you mom!
Funeral Services will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Olds Branch Thursday September 12, 2019 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers Donations can be made to Olds Municipal Hospital, Red Deer Regional Hospital units 32, 22, and the Intensive Care Units who helped care for Darlene over the last few months.
