Obituary for Irene Hrappstead

Irene Hrappstead

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Irene Anne Hrappstead on July 19, 2019 at the age of 75 years. She was a lady of kindness, understated elegance, and gentle wisdom. You would often find mom tending to her garden and plants or reading a romance novel. Mom was born in Swan River, Manitoba, to Gustave and Annie Sigurdson. Irene was raised in the Swan River Valley in the Egilson District area where she married her high school sweetheart John Hrappstead and raised her own family. Irene and John owned and operated John & Ryan’s’ Transport as well as Bicknell’s Northern Hauling in Swan River for many years, and were respected business owners. They also owned and operated a grain farm. Irene worked hard to run the businesses while also looking after her family. Irene and John relocated to Olds, Alberta, in the summer of 2011. Her kind and loving way of life will be an inspiration to all who knew her.
Mom enjoyed gardening, camping, crossword puzzles, golfing, even getting a hole-in-one at the Swan River Golf and Country Club! She stayed active throughout her life and enjoyed volunteering for the St. Andrew’s United Church, Swan River Loggers and Haulers, Swan River Christmas Cheer Board , and 4-H leader for numerous years. Irene enjoyed listening to music and dancing, and always looked forward to attending music festivals near and far, from Big Valley Jamboree in Craven SK, to many Bluegrass Festivals throughout Canada. Irene was very devoted to her family. She had a passion for baking, and was well-known for her delicious homemade buns, known to all family as “Moms buns” or “Auntie Irene’s buns”. Everyone looked forward to her homemade buns, as well as the various desserts and dainties she would make and have on hand for drop in company or that she would bring to family events.
Irene was the devoted mother of Gwen Colbert, and her two grandchildren Jordan and Erik Colbert, daughter Erin (Brent) Lawrence, and son Ryan (Lisa) Hrappstead. Irene was predeceased by her beloved husband John, her brother, Norton Sigurdson and her mother and father Gustave and Annie Sigurdson. Irene will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her sister Margaret (Keith) Davidson, and brother’ Lloyd (Diane) Sigurdson and sister in-law Alberta (Orville) Sigurdson, Ken (Audrey) Hrappstead, Lorne (and the late Iris) Hrappstead, Judy (and the late Larry) Davidson, the late Howard (Colleen) Hrappstead, the late Floyd (Jan) Hrappstead, Margaret (Terry) Neely; her many nieces and nephews.
A Private graveside service will be held in Swan River, Manitoba, August 3, 2019.
If desired Memorial Donations may be made directly to the Olds & District Hospice Society.
