Obituary for Winifred Annie Phillips

PHILLIPS,
Winifred Annie (nee Burt)
1924-2017

Winifred “Winnie” Phillips, passed away on Thursday November 16, 2017 at the age of 93 years.

She is lovingly remembered by her Children: George Jr. of Cremona, Janet (Jim) of Calgary, Tony of Didsbury, Bob (Jean) of Torrington, Tom (Marion) of Cochrane, Alfred of Mayerthorpe, Mary (Chris) of Calgary as well as by her 13 Grandchildren, 11 Great Grandchildren and 11 Great-Great Grandchildren.
She is predeceased by her Husband George Sr., her Sons Henry and Roy, her Daughter May and her Brother Sidney.

Winnie was born in Laughton, East Sussex, England on January 28, 1924 to Frank and Annie Burt. After completing school, she worked as a housekeeper for a local Doctor. During World War II, she met Canadian Army Gunner George Phillips and they were married in England one day after her 20th birthday. She and two of their children came by ship to Halifax and then by train to Saskatchewan, eventually continuing on to Alberta with George where their other eight children were born. They farmed in the Crammond area, then moved to Sundre, Canmore and Cochrane; finally settling into their home in Cremona. Mom devoted her entire life to her family. Special gatherings at her home were really important to her and a pot of tea was always on for visitors. She liked to knit, draw and garden and she had a soft spot for animals. She believed a sense of humor kept her going all those years.

The family would like to thank the Staff at the Sundre long term care and the Sundre Seniors supportive living centre for their compassionate care.

A memorial service was held on November 24, 2017. An interment will be held at a later date.

If friends desire, memorial donations may be made in Winifred’s name to the Cochrane and Area Humane Society 62 Griffin Industrial Point, Cochrane, AB T4C 0A3.
