Obituary for Henry John "John" Blain

Henry John Blain (1928 - 2019)

(Henry) John Blain passed away peacefully at the Bethany Care Centre, Cochrane, Alberta on July 17, 2019. John was born in Irricana, Alberta in 1928. He graduated from high school in Olds, Alberta in 1944 in the same class as his older sister Millie. He drove truck for a year for Martin Stromsmoe until the end of 1945. He was employed by The Albertan newspaper in Calgary for 3 years in the circulation and advertising departments. He joined a seismic crew in 1949 at which point he decided to pursue a career in engineering. He enrolled in the program at Mount Royal in Calgary in 1950. He met the love of his life in Calgary and they were married March 21, 1953. To complete his engineering degree, John and Irene moved to Norman, Oklahoma in September of 1952 where John graduated as a Reservoir Engineer in June of 1955. John commenced his career as an engineer for Mobil Oil in 1955 in Edmonton and spent 10 years in Drayton Valley. From Drayton Valley they moved to Calgary where John started his own reservoir engineering company in 1966. He retired in 2004. John was an avid golfer and held memberships at various clubs over the years including Bearspaw Golf & Country Club, Stewart Creek Golf & Country Club and Silver Springs Golf & Country Club. John will be sadly missed. John is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 66 years, Irene Blain; sisters Pat (Ken) Reid, Shirley Runham, Marjorie Bottomley and Dianne Wray, brothers Danny (Loretta) Blain and Ken Blain (Rita Lavoie); sisters-in-law Lorraine Blain, Karen Blain and Mary Blain as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Henry Nelson Blain, mother Clara Blain (Heins); sisters Mildred and Hazel and brothers, Bill, Louis, Joe and Glen (Jan). A Celebration of John’s life will be held on Thursday, July 25, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Eagle Hill Memorial Community Centre.
