Condolences

Condolence From: Don Palm
Condolence: My condolences to the family and friends of Herb. I can't say I knew Herb well, but he was a customer of the printing shop where I worked. Some days he'd come in and tell how exhausted he was to even get out of his apartment, yet he carried himself and was dressed professionally, often in a sharp looking turtleneck. At first he seemed like a pretty tough character, yet as I got to know him his kindness and generosity became more apparent to me. He'd share stories about his construction company and of the homeland of his childhood. It was fascinating to listen. He came in to get enlargements or copies, and projects designed and printed, usually pertaining to family histories. Herb must have been a keen writer of letters, since he ordered letterhead and envelopes and business cards as well. Nowadays there's less and less fuss about printing, but Herb insisted on some of the nicest paper, Mohawk Linen 70 lb particularly. Knowing he was on a limited financial budget I'd suggest options with less cost, but he was insistent that it had to be the best quality. And there was often appearing the family crest and his full name in a fine flourishing script font in a rich blue colour! One could tell that he was a learned man with high standards for excellence, principles and strong character who held strongly to his beliefs. He spoke very highly of his family and his daughters, and took great pride in the gains he made in researching his ancestors. I particularly remember a time where he had me come outside to his car where he had, in the trunk, his family history book with enormous pages (2'x3' approx), and he flipped the pages and told me anecdotes about some of the photos. It was an amazing collection of photos of his life's story. He would have brought it inside to show me, but it must have weighed 50 lbs! As time came on he appeared to be getting weaker and yet he kept his humour and kindess with him. Herb was a wonderful man, and I will remember him fondly. Our encounters always ended in a firm gentleman's handshake, and eye contact of shared respect. May he rest in peace.

Condolence: Herb was a very generous and kind man. His family was of utmost importance to him - firstly his immediate family, secondly his ancestry. In everything he did, he tried to make life better for others. He has made a lasting impression on me as a strong and proud man with exceptional work ethics. I will miss him greatly. Kathleen Dubchak
