John Petty, 78, of Bowden, Alberta, passed away on Tuesday September 13, 2016, in the Red Deer Hospice, after a lengthy battle with Cancer. John was born in Leeds, England and grew up farming in the west Yorkshire countryside, with his parents, 2 brothers and a sister. After leaving school, he apprenticed for 4 years to become a Master Butcher, he immigrated to Canada in 1967 with his wife Eileen and 2 daughters, where he settled in Vancouver for 2 years. John then moved his family to the North Okanagan where he built and operated a meat packers and retail butcher shop, and for several years raised beef to supply the meat packing business. Then moving to Innisfail in 1976, he raised purebred Charolais cattle and became a grain farmer. During his time in Innisfail, John became active in the square dancing community, eventually becoming a square dance caller travelling internationally to call. He sold the farm and retired to Bowden where he found his next career, designing and building ornamental ironwork. John is predeceased by his parents: William and Edna Petty, his sister Margaret Young, and his wife Eileen Petty. He is survived by his wife of 13 years: Diane Petty (Meyer) of Bowden, two daughters, Jennifer (Eddy)Workhoven of Blind Bay, B.C., and Caroline (Peter Wickenheiser) Petty of Red Deer; two brothers: Bernard Petty of Salmon Arm, B.C. and Arthur Petty of N Yorkshire, England;. two step children: Cory Swain of Calgary and Amanda Swain of Strathmore; two grandchildren: Clay Puddifant of Eckville, and Amy Puddifant of Sylvan Lake: one great grandchild Ben Puddifant of Eckville.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday September 17, 2016, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at John and Diane’s home at 1222 Hwy 587. Memorial donations may be made to the Red Deer Hospice Society, 99 Arnot Ave, Red Deer, AB, T4R 3S6
