Obituary for Sylvia Mathon

SYLVIA MATHON
1953 - 2016

Mrs. Sylvia Mathon has gone to be with her heavenly father on July 29, 2016 at the age of 62 years.
She was born in the Netherlands and in 1981 immigrated to Canada and lived in the Innisfail area ever since. Sylvia farmed with her husband Martin and raised three children. Her joy was her seven grandchildren. Her first involvement as a volunteer was when she became a member of the Markerville Good Neighbors Ladies Club in 1981. Sylvia was a very dedicated volunteer. She believed that 4-H, the Agricultural Societies, her church, the W.I. were all a very important part of our rural community. Her 20 years of involvement with 4-H Alberta at all levels generated a long list of committees and achievements. She enjoyed seeing 4-H members develop into future leaders. Her leadership and commitment to 4-H earned her the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee medal. Sylvia was a director of the Innisfail & District Agricultural Society since 1996 and for the last 13 years she was the treasurer, which she also designed their logo. She participated in the Grade 5 Agricultural Field Trip, it was very important to her to educate students where their food was coming from She was the chair of the scholarship committee and at the provincial level she volunteered on the AAAS (Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies) conference planning committee. During the Red Deer Westerner Fair Sylvia was the recording secretary at the Junior Goat Show and previously volunteered for creative arts. Her volunteer activities at her church consisted of training altar servers, counting the collection, coffee host, greeter and the annual turkey supper. In 2008 she joined the Cottonwood W.I. (Women Institute) and was the treasurer for 2 years and assisted with the preparations for the Harvest Supper and caterings. Sylvia’s passion was working with youth, teaching them leadership, communication and organizational skills. Volunteering was a huge part of her life. She had so many plans of continuing to give back to the community.
Sylvia will be sadly missed by her husband Martin of almost 35 years; son Derek (Stacey) Mathon of Innisfail; Coreen (Wyatt) Soroka of Mayerthorpe; and Joann (Matt) Huffman of Olds, and her seven grandchildren: Erika, Lexie, Logan, Adrianna, Yuri, Andrea and Brycen. She also leaves to mourn her passing brother Jacob (Betsy) Slofstra of Echt, Netherlands and brother in law Lode (Joyce) Mathon of Innisfail. Sylvia was predeceased by her parents Tinie and Derk Slofstra and a brother Wiebe Slofstra. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Alberta 4-H Foundation in hopes to create the Sylvia Mathon Memorial Scholarship fund. Contributions can be mailed to R.R. #2 Westerose, Alberta T0C 2V0.
A Funeral Service will will be held at Our Lady Of Peace Parish, Innisfail, on Saturday, August 6, 2016 at 1:00 p.m.
In Sylvia’s words “I like to thank everyone of you for your love and support. It was very comforting and meant a lot to me. I appreciated the visits, calls, emails, cards, flowers and especially the food Martin and I received during my illness.”
