EDWARD CARL GLUBRECHT was born on August 12, 1915, in a simple sod shack just west of what is now Scapa. At 10:45 PM on June 28, 2016, he slipped away peacefully into the arms of his Savior, with family by his side at the Hanna General Hospital. A couple of hours before he passed on, Ed opened his eyes, smiled, and commented, “What a beautiful day.” One hundred years of age; it is hard to comprehend all that Ed saw, and how much the world changed during his lifetime.
Ed fondly remembered living in that sod shack, the “soddy” where he had been born. His family lived there until 1920, when his father built a new house for their growing family which eventually increased to a total of 9 children; 6 boys, and 3 girls.
It was a home filled with love, laughter, and music.
Ed attended Hudson’s Bay School one-room schoolhouse for grades 1-8, and completed grades 9 and 10 in the Garden Plain area where the Harvey family held high school in their farmhouse. Ed and his siblings always worked hard both in school and on the farm. Ed was conscripted in 1943 and served his country until the war was over in 1946, at which time he was glad to return home to work alongside his family back on the farm.
Apart from one winter, working with his brother Emil in Exshaw, Ed remained with his parents on the farm until 1967, when they built a new house in Hanna.
In 2004, Ed sold his house and moved into Manor One, where he lived until 2012, then moved again into the newly built Hanna Lodge. He continued to drive until well past his 100th birthday. He enjoyed having people come to visit, and loved talking and reminiscing over a cup of coffee.
Edward Carl Glubrecht was a son, a brother, an uncle and a friend. He will remain with us in our hearts, in those he leaves behind; in his works, and in his good deeds.
Ed leaves to mourn his passing two brothers, Emil (Norma),Otto (Margaret) and sister-in-law Ellen as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Memory of Ed July 6, 2:00 P.M. at the Redeemer Lutheran Church with Pastor Colin Millang officiating. Burial will take place at St. Peter’s Cemetery Scapa, Alberta.
